I was raised on the “happy island” of Aruba and played in the national youth football team. I even played tournaments in Venezuela, Colombia, and Trinidad and Tobago. While traveling to these places, I became deeply troubled by the pervasive poverty and inequality in Latin America and the Caribbean. When I realized I was getting too old for the dream of becoming a professional football player, I shifted from chasing a ball towards chasing social justice. I became a social scientist instead. For my PhD research at Radboud University Nijmegen, I studied how marginalized groups in Recife, Brazil, struggle for their right to the city. Currently, as a postdoctoral researcher at Wageningen University & Research, I am exploring the “politics of the periphery” in the city of Medellín, Colombia.
