Nora Derbal is a Visiting Assistant Professor (2018–2021) at the Department of Sociology, Egyptology and Anthropology at the American University in Cairo (AUC), Egypt. She holds a PhD in Islamic Studies from Freie University in Berlin. Her PhD research examined charitable associations established in support of the poor in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Her research is based on extensive fieldwork in Jeddah and Riyadh between 2009–10 and 2012–13. She is currently turning the thesis into a book on Charity in Saudi Arabia: Associational Life under Authoritarianism (working title).
