When Henni Alava wrote her Master's thesis in Development Studies, a supervisor said to her: "You do realise you are writing social anthropology, don't you?" She didn't, having never read such a thing. Later, she did, and found herself to be an ethnographer at heart, even while she continues to lack the title of Anthropologist. Her PhD thesis is about silence, fear and hope in post-war Northern Uganda, or, put otherwise, about the interrelations of the Catholic and Anglican church and politics.
