Geoffrey Hughes is a Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He writes about the relationship between kinship, the state, and religious movements in the Middle East. He has conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Jordan, where he has balanced careful attention to the daily rhythms of rural and peri-urban working class life with intensive studies of urban planners, Islamic activists, officials in government-run Sharia Courts, and others who seek to transform society in various ways.
