Freek van der Vet is a human rights researcher at the Aleksanteri Institute, Finland. He completed his PhD in sociology at the University of Helsinki in 2014. His work examines how human rights lawyers use international courts, for instance the European Court of Human Rights, to help victims of grave atrocities to find effective remedies and how lawyers try to prevent future violations or incite domestic legal reform. His publications cover the protection of human rights defenders in Russia and the Russian cases before the European Court of Human Rights on the second conflict in Chechnya, on torture, and on discrimination of Roma. At the moment he is working on a study on the protection of human rights lawyers and journalists.
