Author: Elena Burgos Martínez

Elena is a linguistic and socioenvironmental anthropologist, and political ecologist based at the department of Asian Studies of Leiden University. She has studied, researched and lived in Spain, the UK, Indonesia and the Netherlands. Her past research theoretically and methodologically reflected on Indonesian island notions of place, space and collective individualism as they contribute to local environmental theory and praxis. Current interdisciplinary research focuses on a re-theorising of island hospitality and transoceanic histories of mobility from the perspective of so-called invisible (female) agents across the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans. Elena's teaching and research are always informed by reflective exercises on positionality, epistemic diversity and the ethics of academic knowledge co-production.
