I am a political anthropologist focusing on the Middle East. Having lived and worked in Syria for a few years before the 2011 uprising, I have been particularly preoccupied with understanding how people navigate life under authoritarian rule and how they adapt to new power structures in refuge. Focusing on these issues I have conducted research with Syrians especially in neighbouring countries for the past decade. I am currently an associated researcher with ZMO, Berlin funded through the Carlsberg Foundation.
