Today Allegra continues its exploration of the EASA2014’s menu with a selection of films that will be screened during the conference. If you find yourself tired with panels and their rigid formats, why not have a break and watch a ethnographic good film? ARTISTIC OFFICE: constructing the 7th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art

The film is a construct of fragments from the exhibition making process at the 7th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art. As an evocative portrait of my research path, the film follows the transformation of ideas as manifested in the collaborative work of the artistic office.

 

The silence of the flies

Author: Eliezer Arias (Venezuela Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC))

The film takes place among small agricultural communities in the Venezuela’s Andes where suicides have become a very significant part of their everyday life. Flies and suicide are everywhere, but no one talks about them. This fraught silence echoes through the design of the film.

Yumen

YUMEN combines ghost stories and “ruin porn” to form a celluloid psycho-collage of wandering souls seeking connection with one another and a lost collective history among the frozen remnants of the abandoned oil town of Yumen in China’s northwest Gansu province.

Author: Tommi Mendel (Zurich University, Switzerland)

Whereas the label of «pilgrim» is mostly associated with devout persons, «backpackers» are generally perceived as pleasure seeking globetrotters. Questioning these stereotypes this film reveals intriguing parallels on various levels between what at first glance appear as two different ways of travelling.

COMMON ROADS is Tommi Mendel’s PhD-thesis accepted by the University of Zurich, it was supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
